Dear [insert Assembly member’s name]
RE: AB 1108 -- OPPOSE
[Insert your company name] is a California-based company
located in [insert your city/location/s in CA]. We produce
[insert product info here]. We are writing to convey our opposition
to AB 1108, which seeks to ban certain plastic toys intended for
use by children. The proposed bill ignores the extensive sound science
specific to these substances and their use in toys, and in doing
so, wrongly targets safe and durable children’s products.
The bill targets phthalates used to make vinyl toys and other consumer
products soft and durable. The primary phthalate in children’s toys
(di-isononyl phthalate, DINP) has been safely used for nearly 50
years. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) conducted
an extensive, peer-reviewed health risk study specific to DINP and
to toys and determined that children are not at risk from plastic
toys. CPSC stated in its report that "...consumers may have a high
level of assurance that soft plastic products pose no risk to children."
Further, the research arm of the European Union also studied DINP
and concluded that exposure is “…unlikely to pose a risk for consumers
(adults, infants and newborns) following inhalation, skin contact
and ingestion.”
The fact is, DINP has been studied extensively and has a proven
track record in producing safe, durable products.
Children are the center of our business and their safety is our
number one priority. We care about their health and development.
We urge you to oppose the bill as it ignores the demonstrated safety
of these products. If enacted, it will result in the needless abandonment
of well-tested, cost-effective, durable products that have been
shown to be safe for children and this is not consistent with our
commitment to producing safe products for children everywhere. We
do not support any product ban that ignores sound science and accordingly,
as a California-based company and a constituent, we urge you to
push for fact-based decision making in California by voting NO
on AB 1108.
Sincerely,
[your name And title]
